July 17 & 18, 2014 - Pruth Bay
Yesterday we were
joined at the dock by a Nordhavn 47 – SANDSTONE…. A beautiful boat !!
Its looking a little
like a Nordhavn rendezvous around here ….
Got up early to check
the crab traps before heading to Pruth Bay … Beautiful calm waters.
We kept 8 BIG crab
and threw back another 8 !! Not bad for
a days work …..
Penny made yummy
breakfast sandwiches for us all to eat underway.
(did I mention how
well we are eating on this trip ?!?!)
Beautiful sunshine …
14’ ….. 11 kn winds …..
We called Hayden en
route to sing Happy 6th Birthday !!
SMALL WORLD STORY ……
En route to Pruth
Bay, a distress radio call from a 32’
boat ( Elaine Mae) with a hydraulic steering leak hailed for assistance. We were nearby and ended up towing her up the
inlet to the Hakai Research Institute.
After anchoring
ourselves in the south bay , and joined by Northern Ranger, we dingy’d back over to
the Institute’s docks and hiked over to West Beach which is on the Pacific
Ocean side of the island….
Absolutely STUNNING
beach and scenery….
On the way back to
the docks, we ran into Jason from Elaine Mae and he introduced us to his
parents who were also on board .
The small world part
of this story ???? Jason’s mom, Elaine
Mae, was born in ….. (wait for it)
FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA
!!!!! Fargo is not far from MY birth
place of Rolette, North Dakota !!!
Elaine Mae Gunderson
(nee Larson) lived there for many years ….
Her family is
originally from Bergen, Norway ….
My grandfather’s
family was from Stavanger, Norway.
SMALL WORLD !
Having enjoyed our
afternoon on the west side of Calvert Island, our plan was to pack a picnic and
hike back over to West Beach on the 18th , however, Mother Nature
had other plans …. It POURED and BLEW all day.
Plan B was to stay
put and watch movies all day …. Which is what we opted to do.
We did head over
later in the day for a bit of outside time …. Quite a different day from the
previous day as is evident by the change in clothing !!!
Our plan is to head
off on the 19th and work our way up to Shearwater, stopping in
Codville Lagoon or somewhere thereabouts.
Winds are low today and its stopped raining !! YAY !!
Our day on the 17th ....
Our day on the 18th .....
Heading off on the 19th .....
