Leaving the Bunsby’s and heading to Kyuquot Sound
Spent a lovely evening and overnite anchored in West Nook,
in the Bunsby’s … a gorgeous collection of coves and small islands that are a
kayaker’s paradise!! We ran the dinghy
around the islands and did a little kayaking and have decided to make our way
south to Walter’s Cove in Kyuquot Sound (the next inlet down from where we are
now.)
There was apparently a mother bear and her cubs spotted on
the beach near us in West Nook … we didn’t see them.
There is a species recovery program in the Bunsby’s to
reintroduce sea otters to the islands … we didn’t see any.
There are apparently sea lions on the rocks along the coast
where we are …. We have yet to see any.
Cameron is beginning to think this whole “nature story” is a
Tourism ruse ….. J hang in there Captain
… hopefully we’ll see something!!!
Winds in the ocean are running at 18-20 kn so Talbot’s
choice to wait one more day in Winter Harbor before making the run around
Brooks, may be wise. HOPEFULLY their
interpretation of the weather forecast is correct and the winds will die down
further by tomorrow …
Gay Passage in through the Bunsby’s …..
West Nook where we anchored for the night ….
We wound our way into Walter’s Cove … challenging around all
the rocks and departing sea planes! We have
opted to overnite at the public dock. We
“provisioned” at the little store and headed to “Java the Hut” for a latte and wifi. The wifi was very intermittent …. But the owner was charming!
Having chatted with Eric, the owner, we decided to stay for
fish (halibut) and chips and dinner was DELICIOUS!!! Eric
is delightful and knows pretty much everyone here. His is the only game in town and the towns
people flock to his place for wifi and a coffee ( and poutine, chilli, chicken
strips and fish ‘n chips) … it was a
bustling spot. Lots of great people
watching !!
Walking home, we walked onto a beautiful beach facing out to the ocean .... I have a GREAT couple of shots, but the internet here is SOOOOOOOOOOOo slow I can't bear to download anything more... We saw some evidence of tsunami debris from Japan ... a big blue crate and a pop bottle both with Japanese writing on them.
Got back to the boats just in time as the weather socked in for the evening and we had some rain.
Our plan for tomorrow is to head to Dixie Cove and anchor Sea Level then take Colibri up and down all the inlets, come back to Dixie cove and raft up for dinner and overnite there. HOPEFULLY the Talbots will have connected up with us by then. Can't seem to get a hold of them .... :-?
I will update the last couple of days with photos when I get to somewhere where the internet connection is faster !!!
Hi Kim, Penny's last blog was Wednesday night and they were prepping for an 8:30am departure this morning to head around Brooks Penninsula. Sounds like they were expecting a very long travel day with not much in the way of signals to download. Have not heard from them yet (6:10pm). Elaine C.
