July 15, 2013 - continued ....

We have arrived in Tahsis, having left Zeballos around 9 am  ….. the plan is lunch on the patio, provisioning in town and by 3-4 pm this aft, we will be saying our goodbyes and Sea Level will head off to Friendly Cove in preparation for the “jump around the outside” from Nootka Sound into Sydney Inlet and Hot Springs Cove !!

While it was hard to say goodbye to our group, we look forward to connecting up with Brian in Tofino and Eleanor, Holly, Su and Anne in Sidney after that ....

Friendly Cove  (at the entrance to Nootka Sound) was beautiful.  We got in about 6pm and after three attempts to set the anchor where we wouldn’t swing into someone, got the anchor set (third time lucky)!?

After settling in, we took the kayaks to the dock to check out the area.  There is quite a history to the cove as it is the place that Cptns Vancouver and Quadra carried out the terms of the Nootka Convention of 1790 in which Spain relinquished all claims to the Northwest lands to England.

Mowachaht’s are the local band there … Jordan is the fellow who collects the dock fees and maintains the church – a beautiful little church which houses a number of native artifacts and two stained glass windows (gifts from Spain to England at the time of the treaty signing).

There is a trail through to the beach on the ocean side of the peninsula, where the waves rushing over the round rocks make the rocks “sing” …. Gorgeous sound ... gorgeous beach at sunset ! (Made me think of Bri’s visit to the sea organ in Split, Croatia).

Jordan’s family just adopted a wolf/lab/husky puppy named Lily!!!  I wanted to take her home with me … and I think she would have been fine with that …. She was ADORABLE! J

We shared the busy cove with 3 sailboats and a small runabout for the night and ended up having to anchor closer to the entrance to the cove than we would have preferred ….  The 19 kn winds made for a bit of a sleepless night for Cameron as we were swinging around on our anchor like a top !  He spent the night on "anchor watch" ..... &  luckily we hit nothing !!
