July 18, 2013 - BRIGUY arrives !!

July 18, 2013 – BRIAN arrives !!

We spent the morning enjoying Tofino …provisions at the Co-Op (fabulous bakery department!), cinnamon bun and coffee at The Common Loaf & then headed back to the boat in anticipation of Brian’s arrival.

A local Tofino mode of transportation ….

Brian flew in on KDAir, not Orca as originally thought, so Ryan Fielding was NOT his pilot, but Bri’s pilot DID graduate with Ryan !!  (Small world … Ryan’s dad, Tim, works with Cam !!)
We were having an issue with our auxiliary engine’s prop not retracting when it was shut off and Cam had dealt with it once already in Winter Harbor,  by diving under the boat and physically closing the blades.  This time, in the VERY CHILLY waters of Tofino, he could NOT get the prop to close properly, so he hired a local to dive under and see what was happening.  It was a simple fix …. The nut which holds one of the zincs in place had come loose and was preventing the blades from closing.  So SHELL, the diver, tightened the nut, scraped some barnacles “while he was down there”, checked out the bottom paint and zincs (all are fine) !  It was a simple $150 fix.  :-?
SHELL is an interesting fellow …. His siblings, Pearl, Naeco (ocean spelled backwards), Gill, Coral & Fin, were raised in an old wooden boat which is sitting ashore nearby us.  “Noah’s Ark”, which we affectionately named it, used to run where Vancouver’s Seabus currently runs, shuttling people back and forth.  Shell’s dad bought it,  brought it over to Tofino and ran it aground, propped it up and called it home!  We would LOVED to have met him … I bet he’s a character !?!?!

Once Brian arrived and we had lunch, we headed out on the dinghy for a little “bear on the beach” sighting …. Apparently at low tide, they frequent the low flats foraging for food.

 See any bears ??

Neither did we !!!  :-/  Clearly we weren’t in the right area !!! BUMMER !!

On the way back, we noticed the Lady Rose in for some work … not that she needs it !!  YIKES !!

Bri, Cam and I were reminiscing about when we rode the Lady Rose, many years ago, on one of our island holidays, when Brian and Jeffery were youngin's ....
My Uncle Brian and Aunty Berenice showed me, on a recent visit to Edmonton,  a life ring that they were given from the Lady Rose – VERY COOL souvenir !!!!
One other issue we had on the boat (there is ALWAYS something) is that the gasket on the front loading washing machine had torn and we were having a small “leaking issue” when we did laundry …. First world problem, I know ….
Cam had ordered a replacement gasket, which Brian brought when he came and our job for the afternoon (and evening, as it turned out) was to replace said gasket.  The u-tube video Cam found on how to do this made it sound VERY simple … JUST do this … and JUST do that …. But when one is working with JUST 1 1/2 “ of clearance, as we are in a boat, it is JUST A PAIN IN THE ASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

‘nuf said.  HOURS later, the machine is fixed … YEAH!!

We had a beautiful dinner at SOBO – a local eatery here in Tofino … GREAT seafood …. GREAT wine selection!!
Saying goodnite to Tofino at sunset ……
